Potholing in Urkiola

Baltzola

Baltzola – Low galleries

Degree of difficulty: Low-Medium

Difficulty: Low

This is surely the best known cave in Urkiola Natural Park after La Dama de Anboto. References to this cave, brimming with legends, can be traced back through the ages, although it was not until 1994 that the GEMA Potholing Group began to systematically explore it and draw up a topographic plan that faithfully reflects its morphology. Nowadays, its monumental entrance is famous around the world, as it attracts climbers who try to beat the laws of gravity along climbing routes of unbelievable difficulty.

How to get there:

After you leave the Indusi neighbourhood in Dima, go over the bridge across the river and continue along a tarmaced road to a farmstead. Then, continue along a track until you reach a resting place. You will be able to see the Gibeldar entrance on your left as you go along the path. As soon as you reach the resting place, take the path to your left and it will take you to the monumental Baltzola entrance.

Description:

No specific material required. There are no vertical sections, although there are some steep, but relatively simple sections.

The cave is like a maze where it is difficult not to loose your way. We recommend you use tapes and ropes to mark your way, mainly for the environmental impact. The cave is made up of four different levels, which make up a series of superimposed floors to a greater or lesser extent throughout your route, a real mesentry of galleries of various sizes, rooms, low galleries, crawl galleries, even sinkholes that can be crossed relatively easily.

The standard route starts from the large entrance to the Baltzola cave and goes along the main gallery to the Gibeldar cave mouth. The light that enters through the entrance makes the route easier to almost halfway. There is a route from the right of the entrance to the labyrinth zone and it will take you down a small canyon to the mouth of the Gibeldar cave. You can also opt to reach the inside of the large fossil rock pool under the Gibeldar entrance by following the river along the left side of the main gallery.
