Poisonous fungi

The Inky Cap

Coprinus atramentarius – The Inky Cap
Coprinus atramentarius – The Inky Cap

From atramentum (lat) = Inky. Due to its liquidness.
Common name = (eng) Inky Cap

CAP: 3 to 8 cm in diameter. Ovoid, then flat, liquidy around the edge, often with radial folds, greyish-brown or whitish-grey in colour.

GILLS: Free, tight and swollen, grey, then black when the spore mature, liquidy.

STEM: White, hollow, brittle, narrow at the top, rather scaly. Slight ring, barely a black mark where the spores are deposited.

FLESH: Thin, white, soft, barely any smell and flavour.

HABITAT: From spring to autumn in groups in areas with buried vegetable remains.

EDIBILITY: Tasty when young. Poisonous if taken with alcoholic drinks or when drunk within 48 hours.

OBSERVATIONS: It is a rather common Coprinus in our zone and can be confused with C.comatus (shaggy mane), but is whiter and with more down. The confusion is not important unless the person drinks alcohol as it produces allergic reactions, such as flushing, palpitations, etc... similar to the effects of the Antabuse drug for alcoholics.
