From involutus (lat) = rolled. Due to the edge of the cap.
Common Name = (eng) Brown Roll-Rim.
CAP: 5 to 12 cm in diameter, convex, with a tightly rolled edge, then spread out and depressed, brown, reddish-brown or yellowish-brown in colour, viscose cuticle when weather is wet. Stains when rubbed.
GILLS: Tight, thin, decurrent, split, flesh can be separated from the cap, stains brown when touched.
STEM: Short, robust, fibrous, the same colour as the cap, stains brown when touched.
FLESH: Fat, thick, spongy, yellowish, darkens when rubbed. Pleasant smell and taste.
HABITAT: Summer and autumn under pine and beech trees, willows, chestnuts, etc… Frequent.
EDIBILITY: DEADLY. It was eaten in past but they knew it had caused serious poisoning.
OBSERVATIONS: It very similar to P.filamentosus but this grows under alders. This toadstool was considered to be edible until people died after eating in it.
